On 1 March 2016, Prospex organised and moderated a Policy Day on natural capital and ecosystem services for sustainable EU policies. The event took place in the framework of the projects OPERAs and OPENNess and in cooperation with the European Commission, DG Research & Innovation.
The Policy Day hosted an interactive dialogue between more than 200 scientists, policy-makers and practitioners. Inspired by a series of case studies and real world examples, they expressed and shared their ideas, comments and suggestions on how ecosystem services and natural capital can be better integrated into EU policy.
The Policy Day looked into four particular policy areas where nature-based solutions can make significant contributions: climate change adaptation, urban environments, water retention and natural capital accounting. Participants were also invited to join the dialogue on-line, by logging onto the new “Ask Oppla”-platform. Oppla is a virtual community where the latest thinking and practice on nature-based solutions can be accessed, shared and promoted. During the Policy Day, a great amount of questions were collected and answered by the Oppla collaborators.
The Policy Day was organised under the auspices of the Dutch EU Presidency, with contributions from the European Parliament Intergroup on climate change, biodiversity and sustainable development.
