One of the biggest challenges facing global societies is the persistence of hunger and food insecurity. The global food system is under increasing pressure from population growth, unequal income distribution, natural resource constraints, climate change and biomass demand for energy and chemical uses. Excessively high food prices are likely to reoccur with severe impacts on the poor and vulnerable.
The European Union funded project FoodSecure (FP7 programme) aims to improving scientific understanding on the factors that contribute to the resilience of the food system and at polices that mitigate risks and uncertainties in the global food system caused by economic and climate shocks. The multi-disciplinary FoodSecure team brings together eighteen world class research institutes and companies from Africa, Asia, Europe and North America.
Prospex is an integral part of the FoodSecure team designing the stakeholder engagement and foresight strategies through scenarios, trade-offs and roadmap workshops.
The five year project aims to:
- Better understand the causes of hunger and malnutrition and the determinants of global food and nutrition security.
- To improve the ability of decision makers to foresee and respond to future food and nutrition security crisis.
- Provide guidance to stakeholders on technological and institutional change and policy strategies to improve global food and nutrition security.
