End of the Road?

The EU funded BEWATER project has been recently launched for the Mediterranean region, involving 12 partner institutions from 11 different countries. The project will promote participatory processes engaging scientists and society to establish plans for sustainable water management and climate change adaptation in four Mediterranean river basins in Catalonia, Cyprus, Tunisia and Slovenia. BEWATER aims to improve public awareness of the importance of sustainable water management, develop innovative processes of mutual learning and create more social responsibility in this area.

The project represents a transition in approach from water management based only on technological solutions towards a new vision, incorporating planning and management conducted by multiple actors. The project is based on an iterative process of mutual learning between science and society, as well as multi-directional and multi-sectoral knowledge transfer. Project partners will organize participatory processes involving scientists and stakeholders in four pilot river basins across the Mediterranean. Each will identify and share the challenges of climate change in their particular region and the various water management options available. Based on this information, joint plans will be designed in the four river basins.

Prospex’s role is to design and run processes that allow scientists and stakeholders to identify the challenges, needs and constraints regarding water management options through society participation.
